Challenge
For millions living in Kenya’s dense, low-income urban communities, connectivity doesn’t stop at the front door — because for many, there is no reliable connection at home to begin with. Daily life happens in shared courtyards, markets, kibandas, salons, and transport stages that power neighbourhood economies. Yet traditional ISP models are built around single-household connections, high upfront costs, and infrastructure assumptions that do not reflect how these communities live and work.
Where public access exists, it is usually through basic hotspots with significant limitations. Most rely on mobile backhaul, meaning speeds fluctuate with congestion. Coverage is limited, forcing users to reconnect as they move. Power outages shut networks down, while usage caps and session time-outs interrupt learning, payments, and business activity. In many cases, providers are informal or unregulated, offering little accountability for uptime, security, or data protection.
The result is fragmented and fragile connectivity. Small businesses cannot reliably process digital payments, students struggle to complete coursework, and micro-entrepreneurs cannot depend on stable access to online marketplaces. Connectivity becomes expensive, inconsistent, and transactional rather than foundational.
The real challenge is not simply providing internet access, but designing resilient, fibre-backed connectivity that reflects how communities actually live, move, and trade.
Konnekt BlueZones address this challenge by extending connectivity beyond the home into the economic and social centres of underserved communities. BlueZones deliver continuous, fibre-backed, unlimited Wi-Fi coverage across neighbourhood hubs such as markets, courtyards, salons, transport stages, and shared compounds.
Solution
Konnekt BlueZones are designed differently because the challenge requires more than a basic hotspot. Each BlueZone uses fibre backhaul combined with intelligently meshed, enterprise-grade access points to create seamless coverage across entire activity zones. Users can move through markets, courtyards, kiosks, and transport stages without losing connection or needing to reconnect. The network is built for density, stability, and unlimited usage — not short sessions or capped bundles.
A critical component of this model is power resilience. In many underserved communities, unreliable grid electricity is a major barrier to reliable connectivity. Traditional hotspots fail as soon as power drops, often leaving networks offline for hours or days and disrupting paid connectivity sessions.
Konnekt addresses this by integrating Fuzion Technologies’ backup power and power management systems into every deployment. This ensures continuous uptime during outages, stabilizes voltage to protect equipment, reduces service interruptions during extreme weather, and lowers long-term maintenance costs.
The impact is significant. Small businesses can process digital payments reliably, students can complete coursework without interruption, and traders can access online tools to manage and grow their businesses.
By combining fibre-backed network architecture with resilient power systems, Konnekt BlueZones go beyond public Wi-Fi. They create dependable digital infrastructure that supports everyday economic activity in underserved communities.
Rugged Grid Power Backup for Wi-Fi Sites
In this solution the Mikrotik AntBox Wi-Fi access point is connected to the FTP-300 via the ethernet cable for data and 24 VDC Power-over-Ethernet. The fiber ONU providing the backhaul is also connected via an ethernet cable for data connectivity, but requires an auxiliary 12 VDC cable for power. The solution demonstrates the versatility of the FTP-300.
Benefits
The Fuzion FTP-300 is a durable solar charged power solution with PoE in a small form factor ideal for Wi-Fi hotspots, microwave radios, cellular gateways, surveillance cameras and more. The FTP-300 is designed for "deploy-and-forget" installations in remote areas and for operation under harsh environmental conditions.
Powered by the FTP-300
This solution leverages two Fuzion products to ensure robust power delivery:
- • FTP-300-B300-G-R1: Ruggedized 2-port solar switch with PoE
- • FTP-ACC002-G-R1: 12V DC 3W Power Interface for ONU
“By combining fibre-backed networks with Fuzion Technologies’ resilient power systems, we’re building digital infrastructure that works where life actually happens — and keeps working, even when everything else goes down.”
